Manila, Philippines- Jane Sariba of Barangay Matuog-tuog, Camarines Norte, gave birth to a baby girl who's legs are infused and it looks like a tail of a mermaid. She said that she was surprised when she saw her baby with such situation. She recalls that during her pregnancy she was fond of watching a local soap opera which has a young mermaid. Her daughter died hours after birth.
This is a rare case called sirenomelia, also known as mermaid syndrome. Sirenomelia is a congenital deformity in which the legs are fused together, with an appearance like that of a mermaid's tail. Pregnant women are advised to have a regular check up while they are still pregnant and eat foods rich in folic acid.
